Online Home Business Website
Do you have a quality, authoritative website for your online home business; one that provides the unique information users are searching for? This all comes down to good search engine optimization or SEO. What is good or bad for your website depends on how your website is optimized and what you are doing to promote it. Below are 3 SEO techniques to consider for your online home business website.
1. Keyword Research
First and foremost you need to identify keywords that you want to target, however, there are a number of mistakes you should avoid for your home business. The biggest mistake is targeting keywords that are impossible to rank for. This will leave you with no visitors and a lot of cash on your hands. For instance; would you try and rank number 1 for ” cars “? There are over 64.5 million.
What you need to do is find sub-setts of the broader keywords. For example, ” London cars ” could be a good sub-set of the overall keyword phrase. You can do this by looking at the ratio of the words ” London” or ” cars ” in the keyword phrase ” London cars ” and identifying the percentage of the term ” London” or ” cars ” to the total number of words in the phrase. Then you can seek to lower the keyword ” London ” to the nearest possible word that is lower than 64.5 million.
2. Page Titles
A page title element is a well-known SEO on-page feature. In the eyes of Google, a page title is the most important feature of a web page. You should make sure that all of your web pages have the keyword phrase in the page title. It’s often easy to make sure that your home page titter with a good keyword-rich title, without making it sound unauthentic. For example, there’s a big difference if you take the title of an article, news release, and an article posted on an article directory website as the same article on your website.
There’s a great Google keyword tool that will help you make sure your web page title is unique to your website and relevant to the web page topic. Make sure that Google knows what your home business is selling.
3. Domain Names and URLs
What you put in as a domain name and how it is important. ”Yahoo.com/plumbers-in-Vancouver” now that is a great example of a URL with the keyword in the domain name, which will help with your on-page SEO and for the sales of your home business.
But in as much as a domain name, even your domain name itself is important for on-page SEO, it is available to you under your resource management, so you do not have to worry about the redirections. This was a great find for me when I was studying my site for my home business.
4. Duplicate or Bad Submission
I recently had a site submitted to 10 directories using software that creates thousands of incoming links. In review, most of these submissions were of poor quality, did not significantly submit to the categories I wanted, or were not specific to my industry. Use of this type of software to submit your site to thousands of free directories is useless and a total waste of time.
When you have a website built, make sure that it is category-specific. Also, make sure each page on your site is submitted to the category. In review, would you submit your business to weight loss programs? Or would you be more likely to submit your business to weight loss informational articles?
If not, your anchor text for the purpose of backlinks should be your business name. When you have your business name submitted to the various categories in your directory, you have a whole block of related search terms you can then be optimized for. This is a very powerful Back Linking strategy that I continue to use.
5. Meta Keyword Tag
It’s surprising to see how many webmasters do not bother with this. This tag is meant to provide search engines with data regarding certain keywords that you would like to rank for but did not make the code on your page. You can use the tags to specifically tell the search engine what keywords you want to rank for, but doing so is not mandatory.
If you’re wanting to rank for “Blog Work At Home Business” and want to be ranked #1 for it, just make sure that the search term contained in the tag is not contained in your website content.
6. Alt Tags
The alt tag provides alternative text when images cannot be displayed. Based on your site content, the alt tag will be the best place to put your keywords. Please do not abuse this tag and put a ton of keywords in it to try and abuse it, or you’ll hurt your search engine rankings instead of gaining traffic. For more tips, see our relevant content blog.
